Is your accountant scary?! I’ve had several surprising conversations with people lately, saying how they – or people they know – dread going to see their accountant because they feel intimidated or think they’re going to be told off for the way they keep their records!

What’s your experience?

The Johari Window (kevan . org) is a psychological tool created to help people better understand their relationship with themselves and others. The idea is that we all have traits and behaviours, some known to us, some not. Things that both you and others recognise about you are in the “open area” or “arena”. Things that others see in you that you don’t are your “blind spot”. If you see things in yourself that others don’t, this is your “hidden area” or “façade”.

It was bit of fun, but also interesting to find out how people see me – calm, accepting, dependable, friendly, patient.

Alongside my accountancy qualifications, I’m a trained life coach and mentor. A client once asked me why her business start-up meeting felt more like a therapy session. Someone else recently referred to me as the “unscary, scary person” when they found out I was an accountant!
